Missouri Republican State Committee Adopts Resolution Opposing Amendment 3
On Saturday, September 28, 2024, the Missouri Republican State Committee adopted the following resolution:
Resolution Opposing Pro-Abortion Amendment 3
Offered by Sandy Karnes (SD 29) & Jim Berberich (SD 22)
Whereas, the Missouri Republican Party is the Party of life; and
Whereas, from the moment of conception, a woman becomes a mother, begins to sacrifice for her child, and needs of love and support throughout her journey to the birth of her child; and
Whereas, on August 13, 2024, the Secretary of State certified a pro-abortion initiative petition for the November 5, 2024 ballot as Amendment 3; and
Whereas, Amendment 3 seeks to explicitly enshrine in our state’s constitution a “right” to taxpayer-funded abortion on demand – up until the moment of birth; and
Whereas, Amendment 3 seeks to explicitly enshrine in our state’s constitution a “right” to transgender surgeries, hormone treatment, and puberty blockers for transitional purposes for minors without parental consent; and
Whereas, Amendment 3 seeks to explicitly enshrine in our state’s constitution provider immunity, shielding providers from negligence claims leaving women with little recourse to sue for malpractice even when not seeking an abortion; and
Whereas, an abortion is the deliberate taking of an innocent human life; and
Whereas, women and girls deserve protection from the risks posed by unrestricted and unregulated abortions; and
Whereas, the people of Missouri have repeatedly chosen, through their duly elected legislative and statewide Representatives, to establish state laws that defend innocent life, protect women’s health, and preserve parental rights; and
Whereas, the pro-abortion initiative petition, if enacted, would invalidate all existing legislative pro-life protections, including the recently enacted Missouri Stands for the Unborn Act which is also known as the Heartbeat Bill (HB 126, 2019), the Late-Term Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act, and the parental notification and consent requirements for minors undergoing an abortion; and
Whereas, the United States Supreme Court’s historic reversal of Roe v. Wade on June 24, 2022, has returned to Missouri and her sister states the full authority to completely prohibit abortion within their borders; and
Whereas, the pro-abortion initiative petition, if enacted, would prevent Missouri from joining Texas and nearly a dozen other states in becoming abortion free in the post-Roe v. Wade era; Therefore, now, be it
RESOLVED that the Missouri Republican State Committee, recommends that the Pregnancy Resource Center Tax Credit be expanded to care for mothers and children; and
FURTHER RESOLVED that the Missouri Republican State Committee strongly opposes the abortion industry’s Amendment 3 to change the Missouri Constitution; and
FURTHER RESOLVED that the Missouri Republican State Committee strongly urges all Missourians to VOTE NO on Amendment 3 on November 5, 2024.
