Governor Greitens and Republican Legislators Forge a Stronger Missouri for Women, the Unborn and Free Speech
Following a hard-fought special session, Governor Greitens signed Senate Bill 5 into law, ushering in stronger safeguards for women, children and free speech in Missouri.
The provisions in SB-5 create protection for pregnancy resource centers and faith communities, ensuring they will not be forced to participate in terminating pregnancies. The law also provides for annual, unannounced abortion clinic inspections and requires these clinics to develop a protocol for dealing with medical emergencies so that they will no longer cut corners when responding to life-threatening situations. Additionally, it creates whistleblower protections for employees who report illegal activities in these clinics.
Pro-life advocates across Missouri have applauded the passage of this bill, which was made possible by the persistence of Governor Greitens and pro-life lawmakers following a six-week special session.
“Governor Greitens and Republican legislators remain steadfast champions for women and the unborn, promoting a culture of life in Missouri,” said Keelie Broom, Communications Director for the Missouri Republican Party. “Although met with great opposition from Democrats, Governor Greitens and Republican lawmakers persisted until the legislation was passed and protections for pregnancy care centers, faith communities and free speech were strengthened. We are proud to have a Governor and Republican-led legislature who aren’t afraid to be on the front-lines, especially when it comes to challenging, sensitive issues like women’s health.”
