Despite War on Painkillers, McCaskill Secretly Profits From Drug Companies Who Sell Them
Recent revelations indicate that Senator Claire McCaskill’s investigation into opioid manufacturers omitted at least one big culprit from whom she personally profited.
In March 2017, as part of her efforts to publicly decry the opioid crisis, McCaskill launched an investigation into several opioid manufacturers. Although McCaskill touted her investigation as a true watchdog effort, she failed to target several companies that posed a much greater threat than some of the companies on her initial list.
Most notably, McCaskill initially failed to target Allergan, a company that was sued in Ohio for its major role in the opioid epidemic. McCaskill’s decision not to investigate Allergen is particularly concerning given McCaskill and her family made thousands of dollars in profits from selling Allergan stock in 2015. This is especially alarming since it is estimated that two Missourians die from narcotic overdose and two babies are born with narcotic withdrawal every day in Missouri.
“While Missourians were suffering the deadly consequences of the opioid crisis, McCaskill and her family were profiting from the companies producing these drugs,” said Austin Stukins, Executive Director of the Missouri Republican Party. “Missourians deserve better, and I believe that in 2018, they will hold her accountable for constantly saying one thing and doing another.”
