Senator Blunt: Supporting President Trump’s Conservative Judicial Nominations

Last year’s rule change to shorten post-cloture debate time for President Trump’s nominations was the result of an effort initiated by Senator Blunt as the Chairman of the Rules committee. The Blunt Rule short-circuited the Democrats’ attempts to filibuster every one of President Trump’s nominees and prevent the President from filling key posts.

It has made a decisive difference in how long it takes to process President Trump’s nominees, notably district court nominees.

Judges serve for lifetime appointments. The rules change championed by Senator Blunt paved the way for President Trump’s constitutional conservatives to shape the courts for decades to come. You can read the op-ed by Senator Blunt in the Springfield News-Leader that sheds light on the process.

National Judicial Confirmations

• The Senate has confirmed a total of 192 Trump-appointed article III judicial nominees – 137 district court judges, 51 circuit judges, 2 Supreme Court justices, and 2 Court of International Trade judges

• 84 district judges have been confirmed since the change in post-cloture debate time

• Over the same number of calendar days preceding the rule change, 36 district judges were confirmed—and that was a time period without several weeks lost to the impeachment trial.
